The Kolkata Police has formed a five-member Special Investigation Team (SIT), led by an officer of assistant commissioner rank, to thoroughly investigate the case.
According to a police officer,
“The SIT will start its investigation immediately.”
The security guard was arrested on Saturday after he was questioned by police.
The officer said,
“The security guard was arrested this morning after we found that his replies were incoherent. His presence at the college has been captured in the CCTV installed on the college premises,”
The police also stated,
“The guard failed to carry out his duty,”
and added that they are checking whether he was alone on duty that evening or if someone else was with him.
The victim was allegedly raped by three individuals: two senior students and one former student (alumnus) of the same law college.
After her formal complaint, the police arrested the three accused – Manojit Mishra, Promit Mukherjee, and Zaid Ahmed.
To assist in the investigation, the police took the victim back to the college to reconstruct the sequence of events. “The student was taken to the college during the day for reconstruction of the crime.
The exercise was videographed, and it lasted for over two hours,” an officer said.
During their investigation, the police obtained CCTV footage from the premises, which reportedly confirms the student’s account.
The investigating officer stated,
“The CCTV footage confirms the girl’s allegations. It shows the movements of the three accused, the security guard, and the victim. We are currently examining the footage,”
The footage reportedly spans from 3:30 PM to 10:50 PM on June 25, showing various movements in and around the college, including moments when the victim was allegedly forced into the guard’s room.
An officer involved in the probe said,
“The police suspected that the law college student was gang-raped since she turned down the marriage proposal of the main accused.”
Police are also probing if the crime was planned in advance.

Meanwhile, protests have erupted across the state in response to the incident.
The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) led a protest rally in Kolkata, demanding justice for the victim and action against those responsible. However, the rally was stopped by the police at the Gariahat crossing in South Kolkata.
A senior police officer said,
“The rally was stopped at Gariahat crossing in south Kolkata, and Majumdar and several other BJP leaders were detained. They were taken to the Kolkata Police headquarters in Lalbazar,”
The protest march, which was planned to cover a 3-kilometre distance from Gariahat crossing to the South Calcutta Law College in Kasba, was disrupted before it could reach its destination.
Union Minister Sukanta Majumdar, who led the protest, strongly criticised the state government.
He said,
“We were here to protest against the rising number of crimes against women. The police did not allow us to hold the rally. The chief minister must take responsibility for the gang rape incident,”
He also alleged,
“There is no security for women and they are not at all safe in Bengal.”
He went further to accuse the police of being biased and politically influenced, stating, “Police personnel act like Trinamool Congress workers.”
In New Delhi, BJP national spokesperson Sambit Patra announced that party president J.P. Nadda had formed a four-member fact-finding committee to visit West Bengal and investigate the matter.
He said,
“Biplab Kumar Deb and Manan Kumar Mishra, both MPs, and Satyapal Singh and Meenakshi Lekhi, both former parliamentarians, are its members,”
Patra also demanded accountability from the state’s leadership. He stated that West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee should apologise and resign, alleging that
“all the accused were linked to the ruling Trinamool Congress.”
On the other hand, senior Trinamool Congress MLA Madan Mitra made a controversial remark on the matter, saying,
“The incident of gang rape would not have happened if the girl had taken a couple of friends with her.”
Background of the Case
On June 25, 2025, a horrifying incident came to light from the South Calcutta Law College, where a 24-year-old first-year female law student was allegedly gang raped inside the guard’s room on the college campus.
According to the student’s complaint, she was lured and later forcibly taken to the guard’s room, where she was sexually assaulted by two senior students and an alumnus of the college.
The prime accused have been identified as Manojit Mishra, Promit Mukherjee, and Zaid Ahmed. The crime reportedly occurred between 3:30 PM and 10:50 PM, during which time the victim was confined and assaulted.
The college security guard, whose presence at the time was captured on CCTV footage, was also arrested for alleged complicity or negligence.
The motive behind the crime, as suspected by the police, might have been revenge, as the victim had allegedly rejected a marriage proposal from the main accused, Manojit Mishra.
The case gained massive attention after the victim filed a written complaint with the Kolkata Police, leading to the arrest of the three main accused.
The police also retrieved seven hours of CCTV footage from the college premises, which reportedly confirms the sequence of events described in the victim’s statement.
The incident triggered widespread protests and political outrage. Kolkata Police formed a five-member Special Investigation Team (SIT) led by an Assistant Commissioner to probe the case.
The SIT is tasked with determining whether the crime was pre-planned and whether others were involved.
Meanwhile, political tension escalated, with BJP leaders, including Union Minister Sukanta Majumdar, attempting a protest march that was stopped by police.
The BJP demanded the resignation of Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee, alleging that the accused had links with the Trinamool Congress (TMC).
