BREAKING | Budget 2025 | Ambitious E-Courts Phase III Gets Rs 1,500 Crore: FM Nirmala Sitharaman

NEW DELHI: The government has set aside Rs 1,500 crore for the third phase of the e-Courts project in the Union Budget.

This project aims to make lower courts fully digital, online, and paperless across the country.

The funds have been provided under the National Mission for Justice Delivery and Legal Reforms.

The e-Courts project has been running since 2007 as part of the National e-Governance Plan to modernize India’s judiciary with technology.

The second phase of this project was completed in 2023.

Now, the third phase of the e-Courts project, which started in 2023, focuses on making justice delivery easier and more efficient by fully digitizing court records, including old case files.

It aims to create “digital, online and paperless courts.”

This phase will introduce “intelligent smart systems” to help judges and court staff make data-driven decisions. These systems will assist in scheduling and prioritizing cases more efficiently.

The main goal of the third phase is to build a unified technology platform for the judiciary, ensuring a smooth and paperless connection between “the courts, litigants and other stakeholders.”

The government has assured that people without access to technology will not be left behind. Such individuals can use “e-Sewa kendras” to avail judicial services, ensuring that the digital divide is reduced.

By digitizing court records, the project will also promote eco-friendly practices by reducing the need for physical paperwork and limiting the movement of paper files.

Additionally, virtual participation in court hearings will help cut down expenses such as “travel expenses for witnesses, judges and other stakeholders.”

This also means that court-related payments, including “court fees, fines and penalties,” can be made “from anywhere, anytime.”
