MUMBAI: The courtroom is meant to be a space where justice is served, where every voice is heard with respect, and where dignity is non-negotiable. Yet, a recent incident at the Bombay High Court reflects that even these sacred halls are not immune to human flaws. A video that has now gone viral appears to show Justice Shyam Suman scolding and verbally abusing a young woman lawyer, a moment that left many viewers shocked and unsettled.
Justice Shyam Suman, a judge of the Bombay High Court, was presiding over a case when the incident took place.
According to lawyers present and clips circulating on social media, the judge allegedly used derogatory language towards a young woman advocate when she persisted with her submissions. Instead of engaging with her arguments, the judge is said to have dismissed her in harsh terms, telling her off in a manner unbecoming of judicial office.
“……we are not expected for explanation…..don’t ask for explanation. I’ll throw you out of the Court….Get out of the Court”
The reports from lawyers on social platforms indicate that the judge spoke in a manner that crossed all lines of courtroom decorum. The video, though short, captures his tone, sharp, contemptuous, and completely disproportionate to the situation.

What stood out, however, was not the judge’s outburst but the lawyer’s measured and dignified response. Despite being insulted in open court, she maintained composure and continued to present herself with professionalism. This contrast between arrogance and dignity is what has ignited such strong reactions across the legal fraternity and beyond.

The incident triggered an avalanche of criticism, with senior advocates, activists, and common citizens calling out the conduct of Justice Suman. Two voices, in particular, have amplified the issue on social media.
Senior lawyer Mathews Nedumpara posted the viral clip with sharp words:
“Cameras don’t lie: Witness the unbecoming conduct of Justice Shyam Suman of the Bombay High Court and the valiant, dignified response of a young woman lawyer.”
By framing the incident as undeniable (“cameras don’t lie”), Nedumpara underlined the seriousness of the misconduct and applauded the young lawyer for maintaining dignity in the face of power imbalance.
Activist Deepika Bhardwaj also slammed the judge, questioning the very entitlement on display:
“Such arrogance of the Judge. Is this ‘his’ court? Judges give so much gyaan to others. They should reflect on their entitlements too.”
