NEW DELHI: A renowned public-interest lawyer and activist, Prashant Bhushan, recently criticized the functioning of high constitutional offices under the Modi government, particularly targeting the role of the outgoing Vice President Jagdeep Dhankhar.
Bhushan expressed relief on his X post at Dhankhar’s exit, calling him the “worst Vice President” for acting as a servile Chairman of the Rajya Sabha who routinely stifled any discussions unpalatable to the government. The scathing critique underscores a broader concern about the erosion of institutional independence in India’s parliamentary democracy.
Even more troubling, Bhushan points out, is that the Speaker of the Lok Sabha, who should ideally embody impartiality, has fared even worse in preserving parliamentary sanctity.
He emphasized the reason behind Dhankhar’s reported forced resignation. According to Bhushan, Dhankhar accepted an opposition-sponsored impeachment motion against Justice Yashwant Verma without the central government’s approval. He posted on his X:
“But look at the reason why he was made to resign. Because he accepted the opposition sponsored impeachment motion against Justice Yashwant Verma without the consent of the Govt, which had submitted its own motion against the judge in the LS. BJP was miffed as it lost the opportunity to show that it was taking strong action against corruption! Shows that BJP/Modi has reduced Constitutional offices as their lackeys.”
Jagdeep Dhankhar Resigns as Vice President
On July 21, Vice President Jagdeep Dhankhar officially resigned from his post, citing health-related reasons. In a letter addressed to President Droupadi Murmu, Mr. Dhankhar explained that his decision to step down was guided by medical advice and the need to prioritise his well-being.
His resignation comes into effect immediately under Article 67(a) of the Constitution of India, which deals with the resignation of the Vice President.

President Murmu Accepts VP Jagdeep Dhankhar’s Resignation
On 22nd July 2025, the Government of India officially released a notification in the Gazette of India confirming that Shri Jagdeep Dhankhar has resigned from the post of Vice President of India.
His resignation, dated 21st July 2025, was accepted and made public by the Ministry of Home Affairs under the authority of Article 67(a) of the Indian Constitution.
The notification was published by the Ministry of Home Affairs under the signature of Govind Mohan, Home Secretary, with the reference number [F.No. 2/4/2025-Public].
