Bengal Teacher Recruitment Scam | Names Of 1,804 'Tainted' Candidates Released In Jobs-for-Cash Row: After The Supreme Court Direction

KOLKATA: West Bengal School Service Commission (WBSSC) recruitment scam, the Commission has released the names of 1,804 ineligible candidates in compliance with the Supreme Court’s August 28, 2025, directive. The apex court had ordered the publication of the list of ‘tainted’ candidates linked to the infamous cash-for-jobs scam.

Supreme Court’s Order

The Supreme Court bench headed by Chief Justice of India Sanjiv Khanna and Justice Sanjay Kumar found large-scale manipulation, irregularities, and fraud in the WBSSC selection process. It confirmed the earlier decision of the Calcutta High Court, which had set aside the appointments of thousands of teachers and non-teaching staff. The Court held that the recruitment process was deeply compromised and violated the principles of merit-based selection.

In compliance, the WBSSC published a notice on its official website stating,

“In compliance with the Order of the Hon’ble Supreme Court of India dated August 28, 2025 in the matter of SLP(C) No.23784/2025 (Bejoy Biswas & Ors. Vs. State of West Bengal & Ors.), the list of candidates as mentioned in the List 1 is attached below, who were selected, whose selection has been set aside by the Hon’ble High Court and confirmed by the Hon’ble Supreme Court, is hereby published in the official website of the West Bengal Central School Service Commission in order to place the List of such tainted candidates in public domain.”

The published list includes the roll number, serial number, and name of each of the disqualified candidates.

Case Title: Bejoy Biswas & Ors. Vs. State of West Bengal & Ors.
SLP(C) No.23784/2025

Background of the Scam

The WBSSC recruitment scam first came to light after allegations of bribery and favoritism surfaced in the 2016 recruitment drive. Investigations revealed that thousands of unqualified candidates were given appointments by bypassing merit lists through fraudulent practices. The scam has been described as one of the largest recruitment scandals in the state’s history.

The Calcutta High Court, in 2022, quashed the recruitment of over 25,000 teachers and non-teaching staff, holding the process tainted. The Supreme Court upheld this decision on April 3, 2024, dismissing the West Bengal government’s appeal.

Teachers’ Protest and Impact

The cancellation of recruitments resulted in 25,753 teaching and non-teaching staff losing their jobs. Many of them, who were appointed under the tainted process, launched agitations demanding justice. On July 14, 2024, under the banner of Jogya Shikshak Shikshika Adhikar Mancha, former SSC teachers staged the ‘Nabanno Abhiyan’ protest march in Howrah against the Mamata Banerjee-led government.

Despite repeated protests, the judiciary maintained that the entire recruitment process was vitiated and could not be salvaged.
