"Bangladesh Serve as Clear Reminder of How Precious Liberty is to Us...": CJI Chandrachud

NEW DELHI: On Thursday(15th August), During the 78th Independence Day celebrations held in Delhi, the Chief Justice of India, Dhananjaya Y. Chandrachud, delivered a poignant message highlighting the critical importance of freedom and liberty, drawing attention to the unfolding political crisis in Bangladesh. His words served as a reminder of the fragile nature of liberty and the continuous struggle required to preserve such freedoms.

Chief Justice Chandrachud stated-

“The recent events in Bangladesh remind us of the value of liberty. It’s easy to take freedom for granted, but reflecting on our past struggles is essential to truly appreciating the freedoms we have today.”

These remarks came against the backdrop of severe political unrest in Bangladesh, which saw the resignation of Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina following extensive student-led protests. This significant political shift coincided with her arrival in Delhi, highlighting a momentous period of transition for Bangladesh.

Amidst the ongoing challenges faced by the interim government in Bangladesh, led by Nobel laureate Muhammad Yunus, efforts continue to stabilize the nation and protect its minorities, who have been recently targeted in violent attacks. This situation in Bangladesh underscores the constant vigilance needed to safeguard the principles of liberty and peace.

Reflecting on India’s own historical journey towards independence, Chief Justice Chandrachud honored the sacrifices made by key figures of the freedom movement.

He remarked-

“This Independence Day is a chance to honor those who dedicated their lives to the advancement of India. Their dedication serves as a reminder of our continual journey to uphold and value our freedom.”

Notable figures such as Dr. Bhimrao Ambedkar, Jawaharlal Nehru, and Alladi Krishnaswamy Iyer were mentioned, highlighting their crucial roles in the fight for national independence.

Adding a cultural perspective to his address, the Chief Justice also referenced a piece by Karnataka vocalist Chitra Sri Krishna, titled “Songs of Freedom,” which illustrates the profound connection between Indian cultural expressions and the values of liberty. This cultural dimension enriches the celebration, bridging historical struggles with contemporary expressions of freedom.
