NEW DELHI: The government announced on Wednesday (11 December) that it is “open to the idea” of introducing legislation to regulate artificial intelligence (AI), but emphasized that achieving a “lot of consensus” is essential for moving forward.
Responding to a question in the Lok Sabha, IT Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw stated that the Modi government is committed to “democratising technology,” contrasting this approach with the practices under previous Congress-led administrations a comment that drew protests from the opposition.
Addressing a supplementary query on potential AI regulation, Vaishnaw underscored the global challenge of tackling fake narratives. He stressed the need for societal accountability and a revised legal framework, highlighting the balance between freedom of speech and the creation of a reliable news network.
“These issues require thorough debate. If the House and society reach a consensus, we are open to enacting a new law,” he remarked.
