New Delhi: Senior Advocate and Rajya Sabha MP Mahesh Jethmalani addressed the allegations against the Adani Group filed in a U.S. court, describing the indictment as “sketchy” and questioning its timing.
Hinting at possible political motivations behind the issue’s resurgence, he remarked,
“It comes suspiciously on the eve of the parliamentary session,”
Jethmalani was emphatic in clarifying that the U.S. indictment does not accuse Gautam Adani, Adani Greens, or other executives of any offense.
He asserted,
“The indictment does not allege any offence against Gautam Adani, Adani Greens, or other Adani executives. There isn’t a single piece of evidence in the indictment linking them to wrongdoing,”
He highlighted the absence of specifics in the charges, noting that it lacks evidence of direct involvement or execution of a bribery conspiracy.
On the Foreign Corrupt Practices Act (FCPA) allegations, Jethmalani said,
“There’s no violation of the Foreign Corrupt Practices Act (FCPA) in India. The allegations hinge on intentions and schemes but lack proof of actual bribery.”
He explained that the indictment alleges a conspiracy to bribe Indian officials for solar energy contracts but fails to demonstrate that this conspiracy was carried out.
Jethmalani also criticized the Congress party for politicizing the matter, particularly their decision to raise an adjournment motion in Parliament.
He said,
“Congress hasn’t provided any evidence of infractions of Indian law or any clear violations mentioned in the indictment,”
He accused Congress of distorting the indictment’s content for political purposes, adding,
“Congress is reading too much into this indictment, twisting it for political gain.”
The senior advocate emphasized that Adani’s global ventures have been beneficial for India and argued that the focus should remain on facts rather than speculation.
Jethmalani asserted,
“Adani has undertaken useful businesses for India globally. Congress’s actions are purely political,”
In conclusion, Jethmalani reiterated that the case lacks substantive evidence.
He stated,
“There’s no proof in the indictment to back claims of a conspiracy to bribe Indian officials for solar energy contracts. The case is based on intent, not execution,”

He urged all parties to focus on the lack of evidence in the allegations rather than fueling political narratives.
Mahesh Jethmalani, a prominent Indian lawyer and politician, is the son of the late Ram Jethmalani, a well-known attorney and former Union Law Minister. Recently, he commented on the allegations against the Adani Group that were filed in a U.S. court under the Foreign Corrupt Practices Act (FCPA). Jethmalani called for a focus on facts rather than speculation, pointing out that the case hinges more on intent than on actual execution.
