Kolkata: Three doctors testified on Thursday in the ongoing trial for the tragic rape and murder of a postgraduate trainee doctor at RG Kar Medical College and Hospital. Their testimonies, given before a special court, bring the total number of witnesses in the case to nine. The proceedings are being held in-camera daily at Sealdah Court under the supervision of Additional District and Sessions Judge Anirban Das.

The prime accused, Sanjay Roy, a civic volunteer, has been present in court for four consecutive days under heavy police escort. Roy was arrested by Kolkata Police on August 10, a day after the body of the young doctor was discovered in the hospital’s seminar room, a finding that ignited public outrage nationwide.

The in-camera hearings began Monday, with a senior doctor and two other medical professionals testifying on Thursday. Their statements are part of a meticulous investigation into the tragic events of August 9, which have since brought attention to safety issues in state-run hospitals.

The case took a new direction after the Calcutta High Court ordered a CBI investigation, reflecting the grave nature of the charges and public demand for a fair and thorough probe.

The ongoing testimonies are expected to play a critical role as the court examines the disturbing incident that has raised questions about the safety and working conditions of medical professionals in public hospitals.
