Tamil Nadu’s Advocate General, R Shanmugasundaram, has announced his decision to resign from his position. This announcement comes amidst a series of legal challenges faced by the ruling government. Shanmugasundaram, who also served as a former Rajya Sabha member, plans to meet Chief Minister MK Stalin on January 10 to formally submit his resignation papers.

While Shanmugasundaram cited personal reasons for his resignation, sources indicate that the decision was influenced by recent legal setbacks encountered by the government, particularly the conviction of K Ponmudy, a sitting Minister. This development reportedly did not sit well with senior leaders of the Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK), including CM Stalin, leading to discussions about overhauling the government’s legal team.

In late October, The media reported in its exclusive newsletter ‘Powertrip’ about growing dissatisfaction within the DMK ranks. The legal team had assured Minister Ponmudy of his safety in the case, even a day before his conviction, which later proved to be a misjudgment.

Shanmugasundaram assumed the role of Advocate General in May 2021, following the DMK’s ascent to power in Tamil Nadu. With a career spanning over four decades, he is renowned for his expertise in high-profile cases. Notably, he led the legal team in the disproportionate assets case against former Chief Minister J Jayalalithaa.

The resignation of Shanmugasundaram marks a significant shift in the legal landscape of Tamil Nadu politics. His departure from the role of Advocate General opens a new chapter both for him and the state’s legal framework, as he returns to private practice. The move also signals a potential reshuffling in the legal representation of the Tamil Nadu government, as it navigates through its current challenges.
