The note indicates that a “new theory of suicide” was proposed despite the presence of external injuries on the victim’s body. The victim’s parents have also reported that they were informed by the hospital that their daughter had died by suicide.

Kolkata: The CBI has informed a Kolkata court on Monday (16th Sept) that Dr. Sandip Ghosh, the former principal of RG Kar Medical College and Hospital, attempted to downplay the rape and murder of a 31-year-old doctor as a suicide. This may have resulted in the destruction of evidence.

Dr. Ghosh, who was previously arrested for financial irregularities at the state-run hospital, now faces charges of tampering with evidence in this high-profile case. Abhijit Mondal, the officer-in-charge of Tala Police Station, has also been arrested in connection with the case.

According to the CBI’s remand note presented in court on Sunday (15th Sept) Dr. Ghosh was informed of the incident at 9:58 AM on August 9 but did not promptly go to the hospital or file a formal police report.

The note indicates that a “new theory of suicide” was proposed despite the presence of external injuries on the victim’s body. The victim’s parents have also reported that they were informed by the hospital that their daughter had died by suicide.

The CBI reported that Dr. Ghosh was in contact with a police officer and an advocate after the victim was discovered raped and murdered. Notably, Dr. Ghosh did not meet the victim’s parents when they arrived at the hospital to find their daughter had been raped and killed. Furthermore, Dr. Ghosh neglected to complete medical procedures in a timely manner and instructed his staff to send the body to the morgue immediately.

In its remand note regarding the police officer, the CBI noted that Mr. Mondal was informed of the crime at 10:03 am but arrived at the hospital an hour later.

The CBI also highlighted discrepancies in the General Diary Entry, which initially recorded the victim, a PG trainee from R G Kar MCH, as being found in an unconscious state, even though she was already dead upon examination. The agency criticized the police officer for not promptly registering the FIR given the severity of the crime.

The CBI has accused a police officer of failing to secure the crime scene, resulting in unauthorized individuals entering and damaging crucial evidence. The agency also blames the officer for the delay in issuing the death certificate and conducting the autopsy.

According to the CBI, although the officer was informed about the case at 10:03 am, the FIR was only filed late at night a concern that has been repeatedly raised in both the Calcutta High Court and the Supreme Court.

The CBI also alleges that the officer prematurely allowed the body’s cremation despite the family’s request for a second autopsy. The agency claims the officer attempted to compromise evidence and was uncooperative during the CBI’s questioning.

The Kolkata court granted the CBI two days’ custody of Dr. Ghosh and Mr. Mondal, with further proceedings scheduled for tomorrow. Mr. Mondal’s lawyer argues there is no basis for the arrest, asserting that the delay mentioned does not justify arrest and that a departmental inquiry would have sufficed for any alleged dereliction of duty.

Dr. Ghosh and Mr. Mondal are the first individuals arrested by the CBI in connection with the rape and murder case. They are accused of participating in an alleged cover-up by the hospital administration following the rape and murder of the doctor. Previously, the Kolkata police had arrested Sanjoy Roy, a civic volunteer, for the same crimes, but his custody was transferred to the CBI following a high court order.
