Kolkata: An investigation has been launched after a group of protesters in Kolkata alleged they were chased by 70-80 people on two-wheelers for several kilometers following a demonstration over the rape and murder of an RG Kar Hospital doctor. The incident, which unfolded on Monday evening, involved an altercation with Kali Puja immersion attendees that escalated into a dramatic pursuit through the city, police reported on Tuesday.

The protesters, who had gathered at Rashbehari Crossing, claim that the trouble began when an argument ensued over their car blocking a road used by Kali Puja celebrants heading for an immersion procession. Following this, the demonstrators allege they were pursued by a large group of people on motorbikes all the way from Rashbehari to Exide Crossing, a major city junction.

“All the way from Rashbehari till Exide Crossing, they kept banging our car’s windows and doors, asking us to step out,” one protester recounted. “We have videographed the entire episode.” They added that repeated calls to nearby police stations went unanswered, with assistance finally arriving only after they dialed 100. By that time, however, the alleged attackers had fled the scene.

Police confirmed they have initiated a thorough investigation, including reviewing CCTV footage near Exide Crossing to identify the suspects. A police official assured that “necessary action will be taken against the guilty” as they work to bring those responsible to justice.

The incident highlights rising tensions amid public outrage over the doctor’s tragic death and raises questions about law enforcement’s response in ensuring public safety during emotionally charged protests.
