MUMBAI: On Thursday(29th FEB),a special court in Mumbai has denied to grant interim bail to Naresh Goyal, the founder of Jet Airways, who is currently under arrest in a money laundering case. However, the court has allowed him to undergo cancer treatment for a duration of two months at a hospital of his choice. Goyal, aged 74, is presently held at Arthur Road jail in central Mumbai and had sought interim bail on medical grounds to address his cancer diagnosis.

“Naresh Goyal has been granted permission to undergo treatment for his illness at Tata hospital or any other hospital of his choice for a period of two months,”

-confirmed Special judge M G Deshpande, who oversees cases under the Prevention of Money Laundering Act (PMLA). This decision comes after the court had earlier permitted Goyal to undergo tests at a private hospital last month. Goyal’s application for interim bail, filed on February 15, cited medical reasons following the discovery of malignancy in the tests conducted earlier.

According to the application, Goyal needs further scans to determine the stage of malignancy, which will guide the doctors in deciding the appropriate course of treatment, including potential surgery and chemotherapy. The medical professionals have recommended an urgent and aggressive approach to treatment to mitigate any potential fatal complications that may arise.

“Naresh Goyal’s health condition is critical, and timely medical intervention is crucial to address the malignancy diagnosed during recent tests,”

-emphasized the plea.

The court’s decision to allow him temporary release for medical treatment underscores the importance of prioritizing health concerns.

It’s worth noting that Naresh Goyal had been arrested in September 2023 by the Enforcement Directorate (ED), which alleged that he was involved in money laundering and had diverted loans amounting to Rs 538.62 crore, granted to Jet Airways by Canara Bank.

The origins of the money laundering case trace back to a Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) FIR against Jet Airways, Naresh Goyal, his wife Anita, and certain former executives of the now-defunct airline. The case revolves around allegations of bank fraud.

The proceedings have brought to light the intricate web of financial transactions and allegations against Goyal, who co-founded Jet Airways. The ED’s accusations assert that he played a pivotal role in money laundering activities, contributing to the financial irregularities that led to the downfall of Jet Airways.

The decision to permit Naresh Goyal’s temporary release for medical treatment showcases the balancing act between legal proceedings and humanitarian considerations. While the legal system addresses the alleged financial misconduct, it also acknowledges the necessity of providing necessary medical attention to individuals facing serious health challenges.
