The recent letter from a group of lawyers, including senior advocates Harish Salve and Adish Agarwala, to CJI D.Y. Chandrachud is a result of the corruption exposed in the apex court’s decision on electoral bonds, according to a statement from the AILU.

The recent letter sent to Chief Justice of India D.Y. Chandrachud concerning safeguarding the judiciary, drafted by a group of lawyers including well-known Supreme Court advocates Harish Salve and Adish Agarwala, is said to be a response to the fallout from corruption allegations in the Apex court’s decision on electoral bonds, as per a statement from the Left-leaning All India Lawyers Union (AILU).

AILU representatives, including senior lawyer and Rajya Sabha MP Bikas Ranjan Bhattacharya, and senior lawyer P.V. Surendranath, criticized the letter as a baseless attack on responsible legal practitioners and legal bodies that consistently advocate for the safeguarding of the judiciary’s independence and the preservation of the fundamental structure of the Indian Constitution. AILU argues that this group of lawyers remained silent in the past when the government directly challenged constitutional fundamentals, including the independence of the judiciary.
