The Bar Association is questioning the Law Minister’s comments regarding the Guwahati High Court’s relocation.

Relocate the Guwahati High Court to North Guwahati

Guwahati: The Assam Government has announced plans to relocate the Guwahati High Court along with other subordinate courts to a new, state-of-the-art judicial township in Rangmahal, North Guwahati. This move, aimed at addressing the long-term needs of the legal community and the public, has created a mix of reactions, including concerns from the Guwahati High Court Bar Association (GHCBA) seeking clarifications on the Government’s statements.

During a session in the Assam Legislative Assembly, Law and Justice Minister Ranjeet Kumar Dass, responding to a query from MLA Ramendra Narayan Kalita, confirmed the government’s intention to establish a modern judicial city in North Guwahati. According to Dass, was made after thorough discussions with the Guwahati High Court, highlighting the limitations of the current premises adjacent to the Upper Court due to space constraints. The envisioned judicial city aims to provide comprehensive facilities, including advocate rooms, seating areas, a well-equipped library, and sufficient parking space, to cater to the needs of the legal fraternity and the public.

The GHCBA has expressed significant concerns regarding the relocation plan, particularly in relation to the previous assurances given by Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma. Senior Advocate Mrinal Kr Choudhury also stated the association’s shock over the Law Minister’s statement in the Assembly, which seemed to contradict earlier commitments. The association, which had previously submitted a memorandum to the Chief Minister and sit-in demonstration against the move, is now seeking clarity from Minister Ranjeet Kumar Dass.

The proposed change of the Guwahati High Court to North Guwahati is a decision with far-reaching implications for Assam’s legal history. It reflects the government’s commitment to enhancing judicial services and infrastructure, aligning with modern requirements.
