Chennai: On Saturday (13th April): In a late-night hearing conducted by the Madras High Court, as the Tamil Nadu Government had failed to arrange basic amenities for a public gathering at the Ambedkar Memorial in Chennai on the birth anniversary of the late leader, celebrated on April 14. Justice SM Subramaniam personally visited the memorial and directed the State Government to immediately provide tents and other necessary facilities for the public.

The Madras High Court intervened in response to a plea filed by K Senthamizhselvi and Niranjan Vijayan, seeking directions from the state to permit them and followers of Ambedkar to celebrate his birth anniversary at the memorial. The petitioners emphasized the importance of providing basic amenities, particularly considering the needs of disabled individuals and the size of the public gathering.

In its response to the plea, the Government assured the court that it had taken a decision to provide necessary amenities and facilities to those attending the birth anniversary event. This included the provision of two Arabian tents at the memorial. However, despite this assurance, the authorities had not taken any steps to fulfill their promise until Saturday night.

The petitioners urgently brought the matter to the attention of Justice Subramaniam at approximately 10:30 pm on Saturday. The judge personally inspected the venue and conducted a hearing on-site. Noting the Government’s failure to make the promised arrangements, Justice Subramaniam directed the authorities to immediately take steps to provide the basic facilities at the memorial, including two Arabian tents for the public.

The court’s directive to provide immediate facilities emphasized the importance of ensuring a suitable environment for commemorating the birth anniversary of a revered leader like Ambedkar. It is expected that the authorities will immediately address the court’s order and take appropriate action to rectify the situation.
