New Delhi: The Central government has officially approved the appointment of Justice D Krishnakumar as the next Chief Justice of the Manipur High Court. This decision comes just ahead of the retirement of the current Chief Justice, Justice Siddharth Mridul, on November 21, 2024.
The announcement was made by Union Minister of State for Law and Justice, Arjun Ram Meghwal, on X (formerly Twitter), confirming that the Supreme Court Collegium had recommended Justice Krishnakumar for the role on November 18. The resolution stated,
“It is proposed to appoint Mr. Justice D. Krishnakumar, presently serving as a Judge of the Madras High Court, as the Chief Justice of High Court of Manipur with effect from the date on which the incumbent Chief Justice demits office on retirement.”
Justice Krishnakumar, who was appointed to the Madras High Court in 2016, is the senior-most puisne judge of the court. Known for his expertise in civil, constitutional, and service matters, he has built a solid reputation, especially in constitutional law. His term as Chief Justice of Manipur High Court will begin once Justice Mridul retires, and Justice Krishnakumar will serve until his own retirement on May 21, 2025.
The appointment marks a significant moment for the Manipur High Court, as Justice Krishnakumar’s legal experience and background will likely bring a new era of judicial leadership to the region. Additionally, Justice Krishnakumar’s background as a member of a Backward Community adds another layer of significance to his appointment.
This move is part of ongoing judicial appointments that reflect a focus on merit and diversity within India’s judicial system.
