In Kerala, a 65-year-old man was sentenced to 83 years in prison for repeatedly sexually assaulting a 16-year-old girl, with the court delivering the verdict following the prosecutor’s call for the maximum penalty.

KERALA: Today(on 16th March), A court in Kerala sentenced a 65-year-old individual to 83 years in prison for repeatedly sexually assaulting a 16-year-old girl at his residence. The verdict was delivered by Ramu Ramesh Chandra Vhanu, the judge of the Fast Track Special Court (FTSC), under the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act and various sections of the Indian Penal Code (IPC), as stated by Special Public Prosecutor (SPP) Nisha Vijayakumar D.
“The accused has been sentenced to 40 years of imprisonment, as it was the maximum punishment given to him, and he will serve both imprisonment and penalty simultaneously,”
-said the prosecutor.
The court also imposed a fine of 4.3 lakh rupees on the convicted individual, with the prosecutor asserting that if the accused fails to pay the full or partial amount, it should be compensated to the victim.
According to the prosecution, the perpetrator subjected the girl to sexual harassment repeatedly, even when her mother and grandmother were present nearby.
“The accused later threatened the victim with death to prevent her from disclosing the crime to anyone,”
–stated the prosecutor.
However, the victim eventually confided in a teacher, who then reported the incident to the school authorities. Subsequently, child welfare services were alerted, leading to the filing of a case against the perpetrator, as informed by the SPP.
“The child welfare services then informed the police, and a case was registered against the individual,”
–added the prosecutor.
