Today (March 15), Bharat Rashtra Samithi (BRS) leader and former Member of Parliament, K Kavitha, has been taken into custody by the Enforcement Directorate (ED) amid allegations related to the Delhi excise policy scam.

The arrest followed extensive searches at Kavitha’s Hyderabad residence by officials from both the ED and the Income Tax Department. The operation was part of an ongoing investigation into the controversial Delhi excise policy, with Kavitha being named as one of the accused.

An official “intimation memo” was provided to Kavitha’s husband, D Anil Kumar, confirming her detention. The memo, issued at 5.20 pm, was signed by the investigation officer, Assistant Director Joginder, formally notifying the family of the legal action taken against Kavitha.

The day’s events saw over ten officers from the national capital conducting searches at the residence of the legislative council member, in the presence of her family. The situation escalated when Kavitha’s brother, BRS working president K T Rama Rao, and her cousin T Harish Rao arrived at the scene, engaging in a heated exchange with the ED officials while demanding to see a transit warrant. Reports suggest that Kavitha is slated to be transported to Delhi for further questioning between 8-9 pm.

The backdrop of this high-profile custody lies in the allegations surrounding the Delhi excise policy case. Kavitha has been implicated as part of a so-called ‘South Group,’ accused of facilitating a hefty sum of Rs 100 crore in kickbacks to leaders of the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) for favorable treatment under the now-defunct policy. Despite her vehement denials and dismissal of the ED notices as “Modi notices,” the charges have led to significant legal and political challenges for Kavitha.

This is not the first time Kavitha has faced legal scrutiny; on December 1, 2022, CBI officers recorded her statement at her residence. Subsequently, she was summoned to participate in the probe on December 6, under CrPC section 160, as part of the CBI’s investigation into the alleged corruption within the Delhi government’s excise policy framework.

Kavitha’s political journey has been marked by both triumphs and setbacks. A key figure in the Telangana separate state movement, she ventured into electoral politics in 2014, securing a significant victory in the Nizamabad Parliamentary constituency. However, her inability to address the concerns of turmeric farmers in her region led to a loss in the 2019 elections against BJP’s Dharmapuri Aravind, marking a turning point in her career.

Despite the electoral defeat, Kavitha continued her political journey, being elected as an MLC from Nizamabad in October 2020 and reelected in December 2021. Her recent detention, however, places her at the center of a legal and political storm, with implications that extend beyond the state’s borders to the national political landscape.

As Kavitha faces these allegations, the political community and her supporters await further developments. The case not only highlights the ongoing battle against corruption in Indian politics but also underscores the intricate dynamics of power, influence, and accountability.
