Krishnakumar of the Madras High Court for the position of Chief Justice of the Manipur High Court, following the retirement of Chief Justice Siddharth Mridul on November 21. Known for his expertise in constitutional law, Krishnakumar’s appointment emphasizes judicial representation and continuity in leadership, as he brings significant experience and diverse background.

New Delhi: The Supreme Court Collegium on Monday (Nov 18th) recommended the appointment of Justice D. Krishnakumar, currently serving as a judge of the Madras High Court, as the Chief Justice of the Manipur High Court. The decision comes as incumbent Chief Justice Siddharth Mridul is set to retire on November 21.

“It is proposed to appoint Mr. Justice D. Krishnakumar, presently serving as a Judge of the Madras High Court, as the Chief Justice of High Court of Manipur with effect from the date on which the incumbent Chief Justice demits office on retirement,”

the Collegium stated in its resolution.

Justice D. Krishnakumar, who was appointed as a judge of the Madras High Court on April 7, 2016, has an illustrious judicial career. With specialization in constitutional law, he has vast experience handling civil, constitutional, and service matters. He is the senior-most puisne judge at the Madras High Court and is set to retire on May 21, 2025.

Justice Krishnakumar also hails from a Backward Community, which adds significance to his appointment as part of the judiciary’s ongoing efforts to ensure representation and diversity.

The Collegium highlighted that Justice Krishnakumar’s appointment addresses the fact that, currently, there is only one Chief Justice from the Madras High Court among all the Chief Justices in the country.

Having regard to all relevant factors, the Collegium is of the considered view that Mr. Justice D. Krishnakumar is fit and suitable in all respects for being appointed as the Chief Justice of High Court of Manipur,

the resolution stated, emphasizing his qualifications and readiness for the role.

The transition will occur after Chief Justice Siddharth Mridul steps down on November 21, marking the end of his tenure. Justice Krishnakumar’s appointment aims to ensure seamless leadership at the Manipur High Court while bringing a seasoned perspective to its judicial functions.

Justice D. Krishnakumar’s elevation underscores the Collegium’s commitment to ensuring representation, expertise, and continuity in the judiciary. His extensive experience and judicial acumen make him a promising choice to lead the Manipur High Court as its Chief Justice.
