Dharwad: Former Chief Justice of India, Justice Dhananjay Y. Chandrachud, delivered an inspiring address at the Sixth Annual Convocation of Karnataka State Law University (KSLU) on November 29, 2024. Speaking at the Farmers’ Knowledge Centre on the University of Agricultural Sciences (UAS) campus, he emphasized the importance of adaptability and innovation in an increasingly competitive world.

Adapting to a Complex World

Times are more complex now. The field is more competitive, a lot more diverse than it was earlier. And consequently, there are more challenges. But there is always room for changes. What you do is not important but how you do it is important. Give your best efforts; there is always room for improvement,

he said, urging students to excel by developing multifaceted skills.

Be Yourself, Not a Replica

Encouraging students to follow their unique paths, Justice Chandrachud remarked, “The road less taken or the road never taken is always worth treading.” He advised students against emulating seniors or peers, stressing the value of individuality in carving a successful career.

Opposition to Ranking of Law Schools

Justice Chandrachud also voiced his disapproval of the practice of grading law institutions.

I am firmly of the view that such classification is devoid of any logic,

he said, pointing out that institutional affiliations hold little significance in a professional setting. He recalled arguments by Advocate Nambiar in the Supreme Court that reinforced the irrelevance of ranking national law schools above others.

Preserving National Identity Through Diversity

Highlighting India’s cultural mosaic, he stated,

The identity of the nation has several individual identities within. The ability of the nation to preserve identities based on culture, region, and religion has led to the creation of a social fabric in the country.

Learning Beyond Law

Justice Chandrachud urged students to develop a passion for the law and to broaden their horizons by reading across disciplines. “Don’t go by the text of the law but by its context to the society,” he said, emphasizing the need for a comprehensive understanding of the world.

Honorary Doctorates and Achievements Celebrated

During the convocation, honorary doctorates were conferred upon Justice D.Y. Chandrachud, former Karnataka Chief Minister Veerappa Moily, and former High Court judge Justice Ashok Hinchigeri, who also addressed the gathering. Over 5,234 candidates were awarded law degrees and doctoral degrees, with ten gold medals and cash prizes presented to meritorious students.

Promoting Accessible Justice

H.K. Patil, Minister for Law and Parliamentary Affairs, announced the state government’s initiative to set up 100 ‘grama nyayalas’ by year-end to bring justice closer to rural communities. Vice-Chancellor Prof. C. Basavaraju presented the university report, while registrars Anuradha Vastrad and Ratna Bharamgoudar, along with deans and syndicate members, attended the event.

The event celebrated not just academic achievements but also the values of innovation, inclusivity, and justice, leaving a lasting impression on the students and faculty alike.
