Jharkhand police presented evidence of “junkie rodents” in court, revealing that rats had consumed 19 kg of bhang (marijuana) from a warehouse. The unusual incident occurred in Jharkhand, where authorities discovered the missing bhang and brought the rodents responsible for the consumption to court as evidence.

Jharkhand: Recently, The Dhanbad Police in Jharkhand, India, cited an unusual reason for not presenting confiscated drugs in court. When asked by a local court to exhibit the seized narcotics in a case involving 19 kilograms of marijuana and ‘bhang,’ the police claimed that the drugs had been consumed by rats in their warehouse.

Background

In December 2018, the Dhanbad Police arrested a father-son duo, Shambhu Agarwal, and his son, on charges of possessing banned narcotics. The police had seized 10 kilograms of marijuana and nine kilograms of ‘bhang’ from the accused, which were stored in a warehouse following the confiscation.

During the trial, the court of Principal and Session Judge Ram Sharma instructed the investigation officer, Jaiprakash Prasad, to exhibit the confiscated drugs as evidence. However, when the police failed to comply with the court’s order, they were questioned about the whereabouts of the seized narcotics. In response, the Dhanbad Police submitted a surprising explanation, claiming that rats had consumed the drugs that were stored in the warehouse. The police officer’s report, filed on April 6, mentioned the alleged consumption of drugs by rats.

Advocate Abhay Bhatt questioned why the police failed to produce the confiscated drugs in court despite specific orders. Bhatt emphasized that the inability of the police to present crucial evidence raises doubts about the guilt of his clients and indicates a potential fabrication of the case against them.

Following the puzzling claim made by the Dhanbad Police, the department has initiated an inquiry into the incident.
