The renowned legal expert passed away today, leaving behind a legacy of exceptional contributions to the field of law. Fali S Nariman, respected for his profound understanding of jurisprudence and his distinguished advocacy, will be remembered for his significant impact on the legal community. His passing marks the end of an era in Indian law and leaves a void that will be deeply felt by colleagues, clients, and admirers alike.

New Delhi: On Wednesday, Fali Sam Nariman, a distinguished constitutional expert and prominent senior advocate of the Supreme Court, passed away peacefully in New Delhi at the age of 95, signifying a remarkable legal career spanning more than 70 years.

Born on January 10, 1929, in Rangoon to Parsi parents, Nariman pursued his education with a Bachelor’s degree in Economics and History from St. Xavier’s College, Mumbai, followed by an LL.B. from the Government Law College, Mumbai in 1950, where he secured the first position in the examination. He commenced his advocacy journey by enrolling as an advocate of the Bombay High Court in November 1950, later earning the prestigious designation of senior advocate in 1961.

Nariman’s appointment as a Senior Advocate of the Supreme Court in 1971, followed by his tenure as Additional Solicitor General of India in May 1972. His contributions to the legal field earned him accolades, including the Padma Bhushan in January 1991, the Padma Vibhushan in 2007, and the Gruber Prize for Justice in 2002.

Internationally recognized for his expertise in international arbitration, Nariman’s legacy extends beyond his national contributions. He tied the knot with Bapsi F. Nariman in 1955, and their union blessed them with a son and a daughter. Rohinton Nariman, his son, also a distinguished advocate, served as a judge of the Supreme Court and held the esteemed position of Solicitor General of India from 2011 to 2013.

Nariman’s autobiography, “Before Memory Fades,” remains a widely cherished literary work, offering insights into his remarkable life and career. Throughout his tenure, Nariman delivered numerous landmark judgments that shaped legal precedents in significant cases.

In December of the previous year, Nariman garnered attention for his critique of the Supreme Court’s verdict upholding the abrogation of Article 370, which granted special status to the former state of Jammu and Kashmir.

Senior advocate Abhishek Manu Singhvi expressed his condolences, remarking on Nariman’s passing as “the end of an era.” He praised Nariman’s unwavering commitment to principles and applauded his son’s brilliance.

Similarly, lawyer and activist Prashant Bhushan took to social media to commemorate Nariman’s legacy, referring to him as the “Bhishma Pitamah” of the legal community. He lamented the loss of a great lawyer and a close friend of their family, emphasizing the profound impact of Nariman’s demise on the nation.
