India mourns the loss of one of its most distinguished legal luminaries, Fali S. Nariman, who passed away at the age of 95. His death marks the end of an era in the Indian legal fraternity, leaving behind a legacy that will be remembered for generations. The funeral of the eminent jurist and senior Supreme Court advocate is scheduled for 10 am on Thursday at the Parsi Aramgah in New Delhi, as the nation prepares to bid farewell to a true giant of the law.

Chief Justice of India DY Chandrachud mourned the loss, describing Nariman as a

“great giant of an intellectual.”

Born to a Parsi family in Myanmar on January 10, 1929, Nariman’s legal career was marked by brilliance and integrity from the start. He began practicing law at the Bombay High Court and, at the age of 38, demonstrated his commitment to his profession by declining an invitation to become a High Court judge, citing he was below the minimum qualifying age.

Union Finance Minister, Nirmala Sitharaman sharing her thoughts said

“Very sad to know that Jurist Fali Nariman is no more. Wise, witty, a walking institution himself, Fali Nariman will be greatly missed. Only a few months ago, had an opportunity to meet with him. Affectionate and respected, India loses an icon.”

Congress leader Rahul Gandhi paying his condolences to the departed soul said,

“My heartfelt condolences go out to the family and friends of Fali Nariman, whose demise leaves a profound void in the legal community. His contributions have not only shaped landmark cases, but have also inspired generations of jurists to uphold the sanctity of our Constitution and civil liberties. May his commitment to justice and fairness continue to guide us, even in his absence.”

Senior advocate Abhishek Manu Singhvi, reflecting on Nariman’s unparalleled contributions, took to X to express his sorrow, stating,

“an end of an era.”

Singhvi praised Nariman as:

“a living legend who will forever be in hearts & minds of those in law & public life.”

He admired Nariman for his steadfast adherence to principles and his courage to

“call a spade a spade,”

-a trait he noted was shared by Nariman’s equally brilliant son.

Nariman’s legal journey saw him being designated as a senior advocate of the Supreme Court in 1971. His leadership extended beyond the courtroom as he served as President of the Bar Association of India from 1991 to 2010.

The National Judicial Appointments Commission verdict is among the several landmark cases of Nariman. He was a nominated member of the Rajya Sabha from 1999-2005. The constitutional lawyer and jurist received the Padma Bhushan in 1991 and the Padma Vibhushan in 2007.

Fali S. Nariman’s passing leaves a void in the Indian legal system that will be hard to fill. His legacy, however, will continue to inspire and guide future generations of lawyers and jurists. As the nation mourns, it also celebrates the life of a man who was not only a pillar of the legal community but a beacon of integrity, wisdom, and humanity. Nariman’s contributions to Indian law and society will be remembered, and his spirit will continue to dwell in the corridors of justice and in the hearts of those who knew him.
