In the Delhi Excise Policy case, BRS leader K Kavitha has been remanded to CBI custody until April 15. Kavitha, a prominent figure in the case related to alleged irregularities in the excise policy, was taken into custody by the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) for further questioning.

NEW DELHI: Today (12 April): A Delhi court remanded Bharat Rashtra Samithi (BRS) leader K Kavitha to the custody of the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) until April 15 in the Delhi Excise Policy Case. Kavitha was arrested by the CBI on Thursday following her questioning in the case. The CBI had sought five days of custody for her.

The case against Kavitha and others dates back to 2022, when the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) registered a First Information Report (FIR) alleging the manipulation of the Delhi Excise Policy of 2021–22. The FIR accused certain individuals from South India of benefiting from the process and channeling a portion of their profits to the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP). The case was filed under the provisions of the Prevention of Corruption (PC) Act and the Indian Penal Code (IPC).

The Enforcement Directorate (ED) is also separately investigating money laundering allegations related to the case.

During the hearing, the CBI informed the court that Kavitha had played a significant role in facilitating the flow of money. The agency presented WhatsApp chats suggesting her involvement in the wholesale license of liquor company Inspirit through a proxy. The CBI also alleged that Kavitha had provided evasive and contradictory responses during her recent questioning.

The CBI characterized Kavitha as the main conspirator and stated that the investigation into the involvement of other individuals was still ongoing. Therefore, they argued that her continued interrogation was necessary.

Kavitha’s defense counsel questioned the timing of her arrest and argued that the evidence cited by the CBI to justify the arrest was outdated. Senior Advocate Vikram Chaudhary also raised concerns about the upcoming Lok Sabha elections, alleging that the central agency was attempting to prolong the custody of a popular leader by arresting Kavitha in a second case.

Kavitha had previously been arrested by the ED on charges of paying bribes to AAP leaders in exchange for favors for herself and the “South Group” of liquor traders and lobbyists. She joins other prominent political figures, including Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal and former Delhi Deputy Chief Minister Manish Sisodia, who have been arrested in connection with the Delhi excise policy case.
