Following the dismissal of his plea by the High Court on Tuesday, Arvind Kejriwal, Delhi’s Chief Minister, has taken his arrest in the alleged Delhi liquor scam case to the Supreme Court. Currently in Tihar jail, Kejriwal seeks to challenge the legal grounds of his arrest.

NEW DELHI: Today (10th April): Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal has encountered another setback as the Rouse Avenue Court in Delhi dismissed his plea for additional time to meet his lawyers while in judicial custody. Kejriwal, who is currently lodged in Tihar jail, had requested permission to meet his lawyers five times a week.

However, the court upheld the existing allowance of two meetings per week. Kejriwal recently moved a plea in the Supreme Court against his arrest by the Enforcement Directorate (ED) and his subsequent judicial custody, following a dismissal by the High Court.

The High Court’s decision to dismiss Kejriwal’s plea was based on the presentation of substantial evidence by the ED, indicating the Chief Minister’s awareness of the matter under investigation. The ED cited statements from approvers and allegations of involvement in the formulation of the excise policy to support their decision to arrest Kejriwal.

The court, after reviewing the files and material presented, acknowledged that the ED adhered to the legal requirements. It emphasized the statements from hawala dealers and Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) candidates in the Goa elections.

Following his arrest by the ED on March 21, Kejriwal immediately approached the Supreme Court, seeking an urgent late-night hearing. However, the next day, just before a special bench was scheduled to begin the hearing, he withdrew his plea and opted to contest the remand proceedings before the trial court.
