New Delhi: On 1st April, a Delhi court has granted permission to Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal to bring personal items, including religious texts and a book on prime ministers, into Tihar Jail during his judicial custody period. The decision was made by Special Judge (PC Act) Kaveri Baweja of the Rouse Avenue Court, who also ordered Kejriwal to be in judicial custody until April 15.

Recognizing Kejriwal’s health concerns, the judge allowed his request to have home-cooked meals during his time in custody. Kejriwal, who suffers from diabetes, will also be provided with necessary medical supplies and monitoring. The court emphasized the need for regular monitoring of his sugar levels and instructed the Tihar Jail authorities to provide Isabgol, Glucose, Toffees, and Bananas in case of sudden drops in his sugar levels.

Ensuring Kejriwal’s comfort, Judge Baweja directed the Tihar Jail Superintendent to consider providing him with a notepad and pen. In the event that these items are not available, Kejriwal has been permitted to bring his own books, notepad, and pen, subject to scrutiny and compliance with jail rules. Additionally, he has been allowed to continue wearing his religious locket and bring his own spectacles.

Arvind Kejriwal’s arrest took place on March 21 by the Enforcement Directorate (ED) on allegations of being the “key conspirator” in a money laundering case. Following his arrest, he was produced before Judge Baweja on March 22, who initially remanded him to ED custody until March 28. The custody was further extended, and it concluded on April 1.

Delhi Chief Minister’s imprisonment makes him the fourth AAP member to be held in Tihar Jail, joining notable figures such as his former deputy Manish Sisodia, former health minister Satyendar Jain, and Rajya Sabha MP Sanjay Singh, each placed in separate facilities within the prison complex.

In addition to the judicial allowances, Kejriwal is permitted five regular visitors, including his wife and children, and will have two security personnel stationed outside his ward. The detailed care plan also includes essential medical supplies and equipment for health monitoring, alongside provisions for his special diet to manage diabetes and potential severe allergic reactions due to a weakened immune system.

Tihar Jail’s daily routine and the specific accommodations made for Kejriwal, including meal schedules and recreational times, reflect the authorities’ efforts to ensure the well-being of all inmates while maintaining strict operational protocols.

During the proceedings, the ED requested the court to send Kejriwal to judicial custody and reserved its right to seek his further custody. Responding to the ED’s application, Judge Baweja granted their request and ordered Kejriwal to be in judicial custody for a period of 15 days.

Supporters of Arvind Kejriwal argue that it is a step toward upholding his rights and ensuring his well-being during the judicial process. On the other hand, critics question the special privileges granted to Kejriwal and raise concerns about preferential treatment.

The decision to grant permission for Kejriwal to carry books, including religious texts and a work on governance and decision-making, reflects the court’s consideration for his personal preferences and intellectual engagement during his time in judicial custody.
