New Delhi: The Supreme Court has declared the Electoral Bonds scheme unconstitutional. The apex court ruled that the scheme violates Article 19(1)(a) of the Constitution. Following this landmark decision, leaders from various political parties have shared their reactions.
Article 19 (1)(a) in the Constitution of India guarantees all citizens the “right to freedom of speech and expression”. Under this, an Indian citizen has been granted the right to freely express his/her opinions, ideas and thoughts.
The Congress party has welcomed the verdict, highlighting its belief that the ruling will strengthen the influence of votes over financial contributions. Jairam Ramesh, a prominent Congress leader, criticized the Modi-led central government, accusing it of favoring financial interests over the welfare of farmers.
“The Supreme Court’s verdict on the Electoral Bonds scheme is a significant step, highlighting its inconsistency with parliamentary laws and the Indian Constitution. This long-awaited decision underscores the importance of prioritizing the power of votes over monetary influences. The Modi government’s policies have perpetuated injustice against farmers while prioritizing corporate interests.”

Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge also reacted to the SC’s verdict on the electoral bond scheme.
“On the day of the launching of Electoral Bonds scheme the Congress party had called it opaque and undemocratic. Subsequently in its 2019 Manifesto Congress Party promised to scrap Modi Govt’s dubious scheme. We welcome the decision of the Supreme Court today, which has struck down this ‘Black Money Conversion’ scheme of the Modi Govt, calling it “Unconstitutional”. We remember how the Modi Govt, PMO and FM bulldozed every institution – RBI, Election Commission, Parliament and Opposition to fill BJP’s coffers. No wonder, 95% of the funding under this scheme was received by BJP. We hope that Modi Govt will stop resorting to such mischievous ideas in future and listens to the Supreme Court, so that Democracy, Transparency and level-playing field persists.”
