New Delhi: Chief Justice of India DY Chandrachud reprimanded a party-in person today (30th Sept) for using the informal term “yeah” while addressing the bench, stating that he is “allergic” to that expression. He reminded the party-in person they were in a courtroom, not a cafe.
The party-in person submitted a petition in 2018 requesting an in-house inquiry against former Chief Justice Ranjan Gogoi.

Chief Justice Chandrachud questioned,
“But is this an Article 32 plea? How can you file a PIL with a judge as a respondent?” Article 32 of the Constitution ensures that citizens have the right to seek constitutional remedies when their fundamental rights are infringed upon.
In response, the party-in person stated, “Yes, yes, the then Chief Justice Ranjan Gogoi… I was instructed to file a curative…” However, the Chief Justice interrupted him, saying, “This is not a coffee shop! What is this ‘yeah, yeah’? I am very allergic to this expression. It cannot be permitted.”
“The former Justice Gogoi was a judge of this court. You cannot file a plea against a judge seeking an in-house inquiry simply because you did not succeed before the bench,”
the Chief Justice remarked.
The party-in person replied,
“But Justice Gogoi dismissed my plea based on the statement I had challenged as illegal. I did nothing wrong; I requested CJI Thakur to have my review plea moved before a bench knowledgeable in labor laws, but that did not occur, and it was dismissed.”
The Chief Justice then informed the lawyer in Marathi that he could not impugn a judge when challenging a high court judgment.
The Chief Justice stated that the registry would review the petition and instructed the petitioner to remove Justice Gogoi’s name who is now a Rajya Sabha MP from the petition.
