New Delhi: On November 8, 2024, Chief Justice of India (CJI) DY Chandrachud concluded his final day in office with an emotional farewell at the Supreme Court. Presiding over the ceremonial bench, he joined his successor, CJI-designate Sanjiv Khanna, and Justices JB Pardiwala and Manoj Misra, as the courtroom witnessed heartfelt tributes from his colleagues, senior lawyers, and dignitaries.
Reflecting on his journey, CJI Chandrachud said, “If I ever hurt anyone of you, I would like to just say please forgive me for something which I didn’t intend to ever say or do which may have hurt you.” His candid words resonated with those present, leaving a lasting impression of his humility and grace.
Attorney General R Venkataramani, adding a light-hearted note, humorously recalled a recent conference in Brazil where attendees celebrated with dance. “What if I ask everyone here to dance on your retirement? I am sure most will vote in favour of me!” he joked, capturing the warmth felt by the legal fraternity towards the outgoing CJI.
Solicitor General Tushar Mehta praised CJI Chandrachud’s impartiality, noting that, “We won few, lost many,” but were always assured justice was being served. Senior Advocate Kapil Sibal described him as “an extraordinary son of an extraordinary father,” referring to his late father, former CJI YV Chandrachud. He emphasized the CJI’s dignified presence during challenging times, remarking that “there will be none like you who shall adorn that chair ever again.”
Throughout his two-year tenure as CJI, DY Chandrachud modernized the court, integrating technology in unprecedented ways. Senior Advocate Abhishek Manu Singhvi lauded his innovations, from the introduction of iPads to virtual hearings, playfully questioning “the secret behind your youthful appearance,” a trait discussed even during overseas events.
Additional Solicitor General N Venkataraman highlighted Chandrachud’s serene temperament with the “five Cs: calm, cool, composed, neither critical nor condemning,” while Senior Advocate Rajiv Shakdher acknowledged his unmatched work ethic, stating, “You turned 24 hours day into a 48-hour one.”
Under his leadership, the Supreme Court E-Court Committee, chaired by CJI Chandrachud, was instrumental in establishing infrastructure for live-streaming court proceedings, especially during the pandemic. His commitment to accessibility and transparency was evident in each advancement he championed.
Justice Sanjiv Khanna, soon to succeed him, expressed both gratitude and the daunting challenge of filling his shoes. “He has made my task easy and tough… I cannot walk up to him anymore,” he shared, underscoring the indelible legacy Chandrachud leaves behind.
Born on November 11, 1959, CJI Chandrachud’s distinguished career began with a degree from St. Stephen’s College, followed by legal studies at Delhi University and Harvard University, where he earned his LL.M. and Doctor of Juridical Sciences degrees. From serving as an Additional Solicitor General to authoring landmark judgments on human rights and social justice, he leaves a profound mark on the Indian judiciary.
