Man Turns Chain-Snatcher to Pay Court-Ordered Maintenance: Nagpur Crime Branch Uncovers Shocking Motive

NAGPUR: In a shocking incident that underscores the complex intersection of financial desperation and criminal behavior, the Nagpur Crime Branch has arrested a man who allegedly resorted to chain-snatching to meet his court-ordered obligation of paying monthly maintenance to his ex-wife.

The case came to light following a chain-snatching incident on February 22 in the Beltarodi area of Nagpur. The victim, 74-year-old Jayashree Jaikumar Gade, reported that her gold chain had been stolen. The Beltarodi Police launched an investigation, which was later taken over by the Crime Branch in coordination with the local police.

During the investigation, the joint police team identified the suspect as Kanhaiya, a resident of Mankapur, Nagpur. Upon being taken into custody, Kanhaiya confessed to the crime and revealed a startling motive, unemployment and legal pressure.

Kanhaiya admitted that he had been jobless for the past two years. Recently divorced, the court had ordered him to pay Rs. 6,000 per month in maintenance to his former wife. Struggling to meet this obligation, he allegedly resorted to chain-snatching as a means to generate funds.

The accused also confessed to committing two separate chain-snatching incidents. He further revealed that he would sell the stolen gold to AmarDeep Krishnarao Nakhate, owner of Shri Sai Jewellers in Nagpur.

Acting on this information, the police arrested the jeweler and registered an FIR against him for receiving stolen property under relevant sections of the Indian Penal Code.

Confirming the development, Nagpur Crime Branch Officer Mangala Harde stated that the accused had remarried during the COVID-19 pandemic and continued to send Rs. 6,000 per month to his first wife using the proceeds from his crimes. Police have seized a motorcycle and a mobile phone from Kanhaiya, along with a recovery of 10 grams of gold from the jeweler. The total value of the seized property is estimated at around Rs. 1,85,000.

Both the accused have been handed over to the Beltarodi Police Station for further legal proceedings.
