The Central government has appointed Advocates Ajay Digpaul and Harish Vaidyanathan Shankar as judges of the Delhi High Court, following a Supreme Court Collegium recommendation from August 21, 2024. While these appointments address judiciary strain, Advocate Shwetasree Majumder’s status remains unresolved, highlighting delays in the judicial elevation process amidst a significant backlog of cases.

New Delhi: The Central government has officially notified the appointment of Advocates Ajay Digpaul and Harish Vaidyanathan Shankar as judges of the Delhi High Court. The announcement was confirmed by Union Minister of State for Law & Justice, Arjun Ram Meghwal, through a post on his official X account.

The appointments follow the Supreme Court Collegium’s recommendation, issued on August 21, 2024, which proposed the elevation of three advocates to the Delhi High Court bench. While the government approved the appointments of Digpaul and Shankar, the name of Advocate Shwetasree Majumder, who was also recommended, has not yet been cleared.

With these appointments, the Delhi High Court now operates with 35 judges, although its sanctioned strength is 60 judges, leaving the court significantly understaffed.

The addition of these two experienced advocates is expected to provide some relief to the overburdened judiciary, which faces a mounting backlog of cases. However, the pending decision on Advocate Majumder’s appointment raises questions about delays in the elevation process.
