CBI Reports: No Significant Information in WhatsApp Chats for 'Judge Uttam Anand Murder Case'
Jharkhand High Court

Ranchi: On Thursday(14th March), the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) disclosed to the Jharkhand High Court that the WhatsApp chats of two individuals convicted in the high-profile murder case of Judge Uttam Anand have not yielded any substantial information. This revelation came amidst ongoing inquiries into the tragic incident that shook the nation, where Judge Anand was fatally struck during his morning walk on July 28, 2021, in Dhanbad.

The murder of Judge Uttam Anand, who was hit by a heavy autorickshaw in a shocking event caught on CCTV. The footage, which quickly went viral, showed the judge being knocked off his feet near Randhir Verma Chowk, close to the district court, in the early hours of the morning.

In the courtroom, presided over by a division bench of Acting Chief Justice Shree Chandrashekhar and Justice Ananda Sen, the CBI presented the details of the WhatsApp chats of Lakhan Verma and Rahul Verma, the two men found guilty of this heinous crime. These individuals, who served as the driver and conductor of the autorickshaw involved in the incident, have been sentenced to life imprisonment by a special CBI court for the murder of Judge Anand.

Despite the convictions, the investigation sought to uncover any potential connections to other individuals that might have been implicated in the murder through the analysis of the convicts’ WhatsApp chats. However, the CBI’s findings indicated that these communications did not provide any significant leads that would link additional parties to the crime.

The murder of Judge Anand, an additional district judge, has not only been a matter of legal scrutiny but also a subject of public interest. Following the incident, the Jharkhand High Court took proactive steps to monitor the investigation closely, which was initially under the jurisdiction of the Dhanbad police. Due to concerns over the pace of the investigation, the case was eventually transferred to the CBI.

This case has emphasized the challenges faced by law enforcement agencies in leveraging digital communications as evidence in criminal investigations. While the WhatsApp chats of the convicted individuals were thoroughly examined, the absence of significant information highlights the complexities of establishing connections between digital footprints and real-world actions.
