In the Delhi Excise scam corruption case, a city court has issued a notice to the CBI regarding BRS leader Kavitha’s bail plea.

New Delhi: Today (15th April): A city court served notice to the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) regarding the bail application of K Kavitha, a prominent leader of the BRS party, in connection with a corruption case linked to the alleged Delhi excise scam. Kavitha, who is the daughter of former Telangana Chief Minister K Chandrashekar Rao, was arrested by the CBI from Tihar Jail, where she was already in custody following her arrest by the Enforcement Directorate (ED) in a money laundering case related to the same scam.

Special judge Kaveri Baweja, who is handling CBI and ED cases, has directed the federal agency to submit its response to the bail application by April 22. The CBI is investigating allegations of corruption in the formulation and execution of the AAP Government’s excise policy, while the ED is focused on the money laundering aspect of the case.

In her bail application, Kavitha, who claims to be a “star campaigner” for her party in the general elections, requested interim bail while her regular bail application is pending.

She alleged

“Ruling party in the Centre is using investigative agencies to publicly connect the petitioner to the Delhi Excise Policy so that further coercive actions can be taken against her”.

“The Investigating Agencies are well aware that there is no substance in the allegation of the Petitioner’s involvement in the alleged scam. The intention behind the purported investigation against the Petitioner is not to ascertain her involvement in the alleged scam, since it is painfully clear that none exists. The political masterminds are well aware that if the petitioner can be connected to the alleged scam, it will bring her, and by logical implication, her father, the erstwhile chief minister of Telangana, into disrepute,” the application said.

“The CBI informed the court that she provided evasive and untrue responses to most questions, contrary to evidence gathered during the investigation. Despite being confronted with evidence, she continued to withhold crucial information known only to her,” the CBI stated.

“At this stage, further custodial interrogation is unnecessary. However, she continues to evade pertinent questions and is likely to influence witnesses and tamper with evidence due to her influence as a prominent politician,” the CBI added.

Kavitha’s counsel, Nitesh Rana, opposed the CBI’s plea, stating that the allegations against Kavitha should not be grounds for sending her to judicial custody.

“The investigation is currently at a critical juncture, with key witnesses yet to be examined and significant documentary and digital evidence collected,” the CBI stated.

“Hence, it is respectfully requested that this court may consider remanding Kavitha into judicial custody for 14 days to facilitate further investigation and ensure justice,”
the CBI requested.
