The Bar Council of Kerala, in a resolute move, has declared October 5, 2023, as a “Protest Day.” This decision comes in the wake of the brutal attack on Advocate B.S. Prakash at the Nedumangad Court complex. The incident has stirred significant concern and outrage within the legal fraternity.
According to news reports, Advocate Prakash was targeted by a man named Shajahan, who had come to the court as a witness in a case. Following the adjournment of the case to another date, Shajahan, in an unexpected turn of events, assaulted his lawyer, Advocate Prakash. The motive behind the attack remains unclear.
In the aftermath of the incident, Shajahan was promptly arrested by the Nedumangad Police, ensuring immediate legal action against the assailant.
To express their collective disdain and to rally against such acts of violence towards legal professionals, the Kerala High Court Advocates Association issued a notice. The Secretary of the Association, in the notice, made a clarion call to its members, stating,
“requests all members of the Association to assemble at the main portico of the Kerala High Court at 9:50 AM today, to mark the protest of the Association against the brutal attack.”
This incident serves as a stark reminder of the potential risks faced by advocates in their professional capacity. The unified response from the legal community emphasizes the need for safety and respect for those upholding the rule of law.
