Atishi Resigns as Chief Minister As BJP Returns to Power in Delhi After 26 Years

New Delhi: A day after the BJP’s landslide victory in the Delhi Assembly elections, Delhi Chief Minister Atishi met Lieutenant Governor V K Saxena today and submitted her resignation. Following this, the Seventh Legislative Assembly of Delhi was dissolved.

The BJP secured 48 seats in the 70-member Assembly, marking a massive gain of 40 seats compared to its 2020 tally of 8. In contrast, the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP), which had won 62 seats in 2020, was reduced to just 22 seats. The Congress failed to secure a single seat.

This victory brings the BJP back to power in Delhi after more than 26 years. Celebrating the win, Prime Minister Narendra Modi assured voters that the BJP would fulfill its promises and put Delhi on the path of development.

A grand swearing-in ceremony is expected next week, once PM Modi returns from his US trip. Sources indicate that Chief Ministers of NDA-ruled states will be invited, and Union Home Minister Amit Shah and BJP President JP Nadda have already begun discussions on government formation.

Atishi served as Delhi’s Chief Minister for nearly five months, taking over in September last year after Arvind Kejriwal resigned following his bail in a corruption case related to Delhi’s now-scrapped liquor policy. At the time, Kejriwal had stated that he would return as CM after the verdict in the “people’s court.”

After suffering a shocking defeat in the New Delhi seat, Kejriwal accepted the election results, stating:

“The results of the Delhi elections have been declared today and we accept the people’s verdict. The people’s decision is paramount. I congratulate the BJP on its victory and I hope that it lives up to the hopes and expectations of the people who have given them a majority.”

While the BJP has yet to announce its Chief Ministerial candidate, speculation is high that Parvesh Verma, the newly elected MLA from New Delhi, is the frontrunner.

Verma defeated AAP chief Arvind Kejriwal by 4,000 votes, making him a “giant slayer” in this election. A former two-time MP from West Delhi, Verma had been denied a parliamentary election ticket last year. However, he entered the Assembly election arena, challenged Kejriwal, and secured a decisive victory.

Parvesh Verma is the son of former Delhi Chief Minister, the late Sahib Singh Verma, which further strengthens his political credentials.

With the BJP’s massive mandate, all eyes are now on the party’s next move in forming the new Delhi government.
