Justice Sanjay Karol, born on August 23, 1961, in Shimla, hails from Garli, Himachal Pradesh, renowned as India’s first “heritage village.” He completed his schooling at St. Edward’s School, Shimla, and earned an Honours degree in History from Government College, Shimla. Subsequently, he pursued a law degree from the Faculty of Law, Himachal Pradesh University.

Justice Karol enrolled as an Advocate in 1986 and in 1998, after years of practice,  he was appointed Advocate General of Himachal Pradesh, a position he held until 2003. During this tenure, he was designated as a Senior Advocate of the Himachal Pradesh High Court in 1999.

His career as a judge began when , Justice Karol was elevated to the Himachal Pradesh High Court as a Judge on March 8, 2007, and became its Acting Chief Justice on April 25, 2017. During this time, he served as Chancellor of Himachal Pradesh National Law University, and as Patron-in-Chief of the Himachal Pradesh Legal Services Authority.

On November 14, 2018, Justice Karol was sworn in as Chief Justice of the Tripura High Court. He played a pivotal role in reducing case pendency within the District Judiciary of Tripura. Subsequently, on November 11, 2019, he was appointed Chief Justice of the Patna High Court and served as Chancellor of Chanakya National Law University.

On February 6, 2023, Justice Karol was elevated to the Supreme Court of India. He will retire on August 22, 2026, after a tenure of 3.5 years. Notably, he is the third Chief Justice from the Tripura High Court to ascend to the Supreme Court, following Justices Deepak Gupta and Ajay Rastogi.
