Coming from a middle-class family , Justice Jitendra Kumar Maheshwari, was born in the small town of Jaura, located in the Morena district of Madhya Pradesh. He completed his graduation in law in the year from Jiwaji University, Gwalior, in 1985 and LLM in 1991.
He went on to enrol with the State Bar Council in the year 1985. In 2002, he became a member of the Madhya Pradesh State Bar Council. He was also the Chairman of the Disciplinary Committee of the State Bar Council, Gwalior Bench.
Justice Maheshwari began his judicial career as an additional judge of the Madhya Pradesh High Court on November 25, 2005, and was confirmed as a permanent judge on November 25, 2008. During his tenure, he contributed significantly by serving on several High Court Committees, including Administrative Committee No. 1, which oversaw higher judicial services. He also chaired the Building Committee for construction and maintenance, the Finance Committee, and the Juvenile Justice Committee.
On October 7, 2019,Justice Maheshwari was appointed the first Chief Justice of the newly formed Andhra Pradesh High Court, after nearly 14 years of service at the Madhya Pradesh High Court. Justice was pivotal during the court’s formative period.
He supervised the construction of the Chief Justice’s Bungalow in Vijayawada and established sub-committees to frame rules for higher judicial services, subordinate judicial services, and gender sensitization. Under his leadership, the Andhra Pradesh High Court became the first in India to conduct virtual hearings on March 25, 2020, during the COVID-19 pandemic.
On January 6, 2021,Justice Maheshwariwas transferred as Chief Justice of the Sikkim High Court, which he held for around 8 months. On August 31, 2021, he was elevated to the Supreme Court along with eight other judges.
Known to be a very humble and diligent judge , Justice Maheshwari, in his speech, with utmost emotion stated that “I have done nothing, in fact the credit has come to me by those who deserve credit”
Justice Maheshwariwas the first Chief Justice of the newly established Andhra Pradesh High Court at Amravati. He disposed of more than 4500 cases during the short span of 15 months as Chief Justice of Andhra Pradesh High Court. Justice J.K. Maheshwari became the first Chief Justice in the history of Sikkim High Court to be elevated as Supreme Court Judge.
