Justice Abhay Sreenivas Oka, “a torchbearer of social change and administrative accountability” , is known for his steadfast dedication to justice ,profound legal expertise, and an enduring commitment to preserving the rule of law. Belonging to a legal background, Justice Oka, firstly planned to pursue engineering but dropped in the mid-way and joined the legal fraternity instead. After completing his B.Sc.. from Bombay University , he went on to complete his LLB from the same university.
His father ,Shri Shreeniwas W. Oka., being a renowned lawyer, Justice Oka started his practice from his father’s chambers and then joined the chambers of V.P. Tipnis the then Senior Counsel for the Union of India in 1985.
Justice Abhay S. Oka has had an illustrious career in the Indian judiciary, marked by his significant contributions to environmental protection, civil liberties, and human rights. Appointed as an Additional Judge of the High Court of Bombay in 2003 and elevated to a Permanent Judge in 2005, his judicial journey has been defined by impactful decisions.
His tenure as the Chief Justice of the Karnataka High Court from 2019 further cemented his reputation for integrity and progressive jurisprudence. In 2021, Justice Oka was elevated to the Supreme Court of India, where he continues to be the torchbearer of the rights of marginalized communities such as workers, sweepers, poor and the transgender communities.
