Today, On 11th November, Tihar Jail authorities informed the Delhi High Court that Yasin Malik ended his hunger strike and is receiving the necessary medical care. In his petition, Malik requested the court to issue directions for his referral to AIIMS or another super-specialty hospital in New Delhi or the Kashmir region for proper medical treatment. The authorities confirmed that he is being provided with adequate medical aid.

New Delhi: The Tihar Jail authorities informed the Delhi High Court that convicted separatist leader Yasin Malik ended his hunger strike on November 8 and is receiving necessary medical treatment.

The authorities, including those from the Centre, opposed Malik’s petition requesting admission to AIIMS due to claims of his declining health. They asked for more time to review the medical status report provided by the jail authorities before submitting their response.

Justice Jasmeet Singh, after considering the submissions, scheduled the next hearing for November 18. In the meantime, he directed the jail authorities to ensure that Malik receives appropriate medical care.

The lawyer representing Yasin Malik expressed concern over the rescheduling of the hearing, stating that the legal team plans to visit Malik at Tihar Jail today to verify the claims made by the jail authorities.

On Friday, the Delhi High Court issued a notice to the Centre, the Director General of Tihar Jail, and other relevant authorities in response to Malik’s petition.

He alleged that he has been on a hunger strike since November 1 due to being denied necessary medical treatment. In his plea, Malik is seeking appropriate court directives to ensure he receives proper medical care at AIIMS or any other super-specialty hospital, either in New Delhi or in the Kashmir region.

Malik has also requested the court to instruct the authorities to ensure his presence in courts within the National Capital Territory (NCT) of Delhi whenever required.

The authorities said,

“After reviewing the submissions, the court has ordered the jail superintendent to provide a medical status report on Malik,”

In the meantime, the court directed the jail authorities to ensure Malik receives the necessary medical treatment as per the jail’s regulations.

Yasin Malik, a prominent separatist leader from Jammu and Kashmir, is the head of the Jammu Kashmir Liberation Front (JKLF), an organization advocating for Kashmiri independence. Over the years, Malik has been an influential figure in the Kashmir separatist movement. His political activities have often led to conflicts with the Indian government, particularly his advocacy for a plebiscite in Jammu and Kashmir to decide the region’s future.

In 2019, Malik was arrested and charged under various sections of the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act (UAPA) for his involvement in alleged terrorist activities, including organizing protests, funding separatist groups, and inciting violence in Jammu and Kashmir. These charges led to his conviction and sentencing by the National Investigation Agency (NIA) court. Malik sentenced to life imprisonment in 2022 for his role in a 2017 terror funding case.
