Justice Anil K Narendran remarked on the “dismal state of affairs in Kerala” as the MLA, with severe spinal injuries, was carried away without a stretcher. The incident, which occurred during a Guinness World Record attempt event, led to allegations of negligence against the organizers and legal action, including interim bail for event organizer Nigosh Kumar.

Kochi: The Kerala High Court expressed strong criticism towards the state authorities regarding the way Thrikkakara MLA Uma Thomas was handled after an unfortunate accident at an event venue. The incident took place when the MLA fell from a VIP gallery during an event.

Justice Anil K Narendran highlighted the seriousness of the matter and raised concerns about the carelessness in handling the injured MLA, who had sustained critical spinal injuries.

“Dismal state of affairs in Kerala where the person was so casually carried from the stadium. A person with spinal injury was casually carried away without even putting her on a stretcher,”

-observed Justice Narendran during the hearing.

This remark was made while Justice Narendran and Justice Muralee Krishna S were interacting with the State’s Additional Advocate General during the hearing of another case.

The Bench expressed dissatisfaction over the handling of the incident and the lack of proper safety measures at public events.

The incident involving MLA Uma Thomas occurred on December 29, 2024, at the Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium in Kochi. The stadium was hosting a grand event featuring 12,000 Bharatanatyam performers, aiming to set a Guinness World Record.

Congress leader and Thrikkakara MLA Uma Thomas had been invited as a guest of honor for the event.

While taking her seat in the VIP gallery, MLA Thomas lost her balance and fell 15 feet to the ground. The accident resulted in severe injuries to her brain, spine, and lungs. She was immediately placed on ventilator support due to the seriousness of her condition. The manner in which she was carried out of the stadium without using a stretcher raised significant concerns and criticism.

The event organizers faced allegations of negligence for failing to ensure proper safety measures at the venue.

Following the incident, a criminal case was filed against the organizers. Nigosh Kumar, the proprietor of Mridanga Vision, which organized the event named ‘Mridanga Naadam,’ was arrested in connection with the case. However, he was later granted interim bail.

The tragic incident has brought attention to the need for stringent safety protocols at public events and the necessity of handling injuries with utmost care to prevent further harm.
