Karnataka: On Tuesday (5th March), the Karnataka High Court intervened by issuing an interim stay order against the decision of a special court to transfer the gold and diamond jewelry belonging to former Tamil Nadu Chief Minister J Jayalalithaa to the Tamil Nadu government. These ornaments were crucial evidence in the disproportionate assets case involving Jayalalithaa.

Judge H. A. Mohan, presiding over the Additional City Civil and Sessions Court, had previously directed the transfer of the confiscated valuables to the Tamil Nadu Government.

In its ruling, the special court allowed for 20 kg of the jewelry to be sold or auctioned while exempting 7 kg, which Jayalalithaa had inherited from her mother.

The decision came following a petition filed by Jayalalithaa’s niece, J. Deepa, and was made by a bench led by Justice PM Nawaz. The court has also requested that the Karnataka government submit objections regarding the case. The hearing has been adjourned until May 26, pending further deliberation.

Originally scheduled for March 6 and 7, the special court had ordered the transfer of 27 kg of gold and diamond jewelry, presently held in the Karnataka Government treasury, to the neighboring state. This move aimed to enable the realization of assets valued at Rs 100 crore to mobilise the fine imposed on Jayalalithaa.

The disproportionate assets trial, involving Jayalalithaa, her former aide V Sasikala, V N Sudhakaran (Jayalalithaa’s disowned foster son), and Sasikala’s sister-in-law J Ilavarasi, was conducted by the Special Court in Bengaluru nearly a decade ago, resulting in their conviction.
