Mumbai: Today (29th July): The Bombay High Court imposed a Rs 4.5 crore penalty on Patanjali Ayurved for violating an ad-interim order that prohibited the sale of its camphor products. This decision came in the trademark infringement where Patanjali was accused of passing off and trademark infringement.
Justice RI Chagla issued the order following an interim application by Mangalam Organics, which alleged that Patanjali had breached the court’s earlier injunction, issued on August 30, 2023, to stay the sale of camphor products.
Patanjali, through an affidavit, admitted to violating the order and apologized unconditionally, pledging to comply with the court’s directives. The affidavit revealed that Patanjali had supplied camphor products worth Rs 49,57,861 to distributors until June 24 and that products valued at Rs 25,94,505 were still in distributors’ hands, with sales halted.

However, Mangalam Organics alleged that Patanjali continued selling the products after June 24, pointing out that camphor products were listed on Patanjali’s website on July 8, information which was not included in Patanjali’s affidavit.
During a hearing on July 8, the court noted Patanjali’s admission of continued supply and sales of camphor products after the injunction. As a result, the court mandated Patanjali to remedy its contempt by depositing Rs 50 lakh and instructed Mangalam Organics to provide an affidavit detailing the breaches.
In the latest hearing, the court ordered Patanjali to pay an additional Rs 4 crore for violating the court order.
