The state’s counsel informed the court that no coercive measures will be pursued against the TMC Rajya Sabha MP in West Bengal until an official order is issued.

Kolkata: Lawyers representing TMC MP Sukhendu Sekhar Roy and the state informed the Calcutta High Court on Tuesday that they have reached an agreement regarding Roy’s social media post, in which he called for the CBI to interrogate the Kolkata Police Commissioner in connection with the alleged rape and murder case at R G Kar Medical College and Hospital.

Roy’s lawyer stated that he agreed to delete the post from his X-handle, where he demanded custodial interrogation of the police commissioner and the former principal of the medical college. In response, the state’s counsel assured the court that no action would be taken against Roy in connection with this matter.

Justice Rajarshi Bharadwaj, after hearing both sides, announced that he would issue an order on Wednesday, following Roy’s deletion of the social media post and the state’s submission of a report confirming that no further action would be taken against him.

The state’s counsel also assured the court that no coercive measures would be enforced against the TMC Rajya Sabha MP in West Bengal before the order is passed.

Trinamool Congress (TMC) Member of Parliament, Sukhendu Sekhar Roy, agreed to delete a social media post that sparked significant controversy. This development disclosed to the Calcutta High Court by legal representatives on both sides during a recent hearing. The state government, in a related move, has decided not to pursue any legal action against Roy, provided that the post is removed. This agreement marks the culmination of a series of discussions and legal considerations surrounding the issue.

The controversy began when Sukhendu Sekhar Roy, a senior leader within the TMC and a prominent voice in West Bengal’s political landscape, posted content on a social media platform that was perceived as contentious by certain quarters.

The post, which attracted widespread attention, quickly became a focal point of debate. Critics argued that the post was not only provocative but also had the potential to escalate tensions in the already politically charged environment of West Bengal. Supporters of Roy, however, defended his right to free speech, insisting that his post was within the bounds of legitimate political expression.

The case of TMC MP Sukhendu Sekhar Roy and his controversial social media post illustrates the delicate balance that must be maintained between upholding free speech and ensuring that public discourse does not cross the line into incitement or provocation. The Calcutta High Court’s role in facilitating a resolution that avoids legal penalties while also addressing the concerns raised by the post is a noteworthy example of judicial intervention in sensitive political matters.
