NEW DELHI: The Supreme Court Collegium has recently made significant recommendations for the appointment of three new judges to the Madhya Pradesh High Court. This decision includes the names of one judicial officer and two advocates, marking a crucial step in strengthening the judicial capacity of the High Court.

The judicial officer recommended for appointment is Ramkumar Choubey. Alongside him, the Collegium has also recommended the names of two advocates, Deepak Khot and Pavan Kumar Dwivedi (also known as Pavan Dwivedi), for elevation to the positions of judges in the Madhya Pradesh High Court.

These recommendations were made following a thorough process of scrutiny and evaluation by the Supreme Court Collegium, which is currently headed by Chief Justice DY Chandrachud and includes Justices Sanjiv Khanna and BR Gavai. The Collegium’s resolution noted that the recommendation for the appointment of the judicial officer, Ramkumar Choubey, was made by the Collegium of the High Court on two separate occasions, May 11, 2023, and August 9, 2023. Meanwhile, the recommendation for the appointment of the two advocates, Deepak Khot and Pavan Kumar Dwivedi, was initially made by the High Court Collegium on November 11, 2022.

Further, on October 17, 2023, the Supreme Court Collegium carefully reviewed and assessed the material on record. As part of the Memorandum of Procedure, Judges of the Supreme Court familiar with the affairs of the Madhya Pradesh High Court were consulted to ascertain the fitness and suitability of the candidates. Additionally, the Chief Minister and the Governor of the State of Madhya Pradesh conveyed their concurrence to these recommendations.

The resolution also acknowledges the pending appointment of two advocates, whose names had been proposed by the Collegium in October 2023. This move by the Supreme Court Collegium is a significant development in the judicial appointments process, aimed at bolstering the bench strength of the Madhya Pradesh High Court and ensuring the effective dispensation of justice.
