Justice Vikram Nath has urged the Delhi High Court to start live-streaming its proceedings, calling it the premier institution of the country. He reminded that judges had no objections and asked to be invited when live-streaming begins.

New Delhi: Supreme Court judge Justice Vikram Nath on Thursday appealed to the Delhi High Court to begin live-streaming its court proceedings.

He made this appeal while speaking at the launch event of several digital initiatives of the High Court, including the Delhi High Court Mobile App, e-HRMS Portal for Judicial Officers, e-Office Pilot Project, and onboarding of MCD Appellate Tribunal/JJBs on e-Courts, along with the Digital Preservation of Judicial Records project.

During the event, Justice Nath openly said,

“Live streaming has not started in Delhi. Delhi High Court must go live. It is the premiere institution of the country. That is my requestion. It has to be full house decision and some judges may have some issues but it should go live.”

To make his point stronger, he publicly asked the judges present whether they had any objection. He also asked the Chief Justice of the Delhi High Court if there was any objection.

According to him,

“All of them said no.”

Justice Nath then addressed Justice Prathiba M Singh, who heads the Delhi High Court IT Committee. He said that since none of the judges had raised any objection, it was now time to take the decision forward.

His words were,

“Then it should go live. Call me again [to inaugurate] when it goes live.”

Interestingly, this is not the first time Delhi High Court has spoken about live-streaming. Back in October 2023, the High Court had officially announced the start of live-streaming of proceedings. At that time, the court had said,

“In pursuit of greater access to justice, the High Court of Delhi is going to start the live streaming of court proceedings on 11 October, 2023 at 10:30 am in Court No. 1 (comprising Hon’ble Mr Justice Satish Chandra Sharma, Hon’ble the Chief Justice and Hon’ble Mr Justice Sanjeev Narula) in an identified matter.”

However, after conducting an initial experiment, the project was soon stopped. Even today, the live-streaming link is still available on the home page of the official Delhi High Court website under the title “LIVE STREAMING”.

But the High Court had also clarified in its earlier communication that

“the contents of ‘LIVE STREAMING’ are for information purpose only and the live streaming/archival data shall not be considered official record of the court proceedings.”

Currently, the Delhi High Court already provides a hybrid system for better access. This system allows lawyers, litigants, and even the general public to attend the hearings of its benches through the WebEx platform.
