Today, On 24th September, The Punjab and Haryana High Court initiated a suo motu Public Interest Litigation (PIL) following the tragic incident where a man took his own life at the Golden Temple. The firearm used belonged to a security officer accompanying a judge who had come to pay respects at the shrine.

The Punjab and Haryana High Court, on Tuesday, took suo motu cognizance of an incident in which a man fatally shot himself using a firearm he had taken from a personal security officer (PSO) escorting a High Court judge at the Golden Temple in Amritsar.

A bench comprising Chief Justice Sheel Nagu and Justice Anil Kshetarpal described the incident as a significant security lapse and instructed the Punjab Director General of Police to appear before the court via video conferencing on Wednesday.

The court’s action based on news reports published on September 22.

The firearm used in the incident belonged to an Assistant Sub-Inspector (ASI) who was accompanying the judge during a visit to the Golden Temple.

A police officer informed,

“The bullets penetrated his head, and he died instantly. The police transported the body to a hospital,”

Additional Advocate General Saurav Khurana, representing the State of Punjab, instructed to gather details regarding the incident.

The court’s decision to intervene highlights the broader issue of public safety and security, especially in locations frequented by high-profile individuals. This case put a spotlight on the security measures in place at one of India’s most visited religious sites and the immediate need for review and potential reforms.

The tragic incident has led to a widespread call for heightened security protocols, with the High Court poised to monitor the investigation and ensure accountability from the relevant authorities in Punjab.
