Today (March 4th), the Jharkhand High Court initiated suo motu proceedings regarding the gang-rape of a foreign tourist in Dumka district. The court has requested the Director General of Police (DGP), Chief Secretary, and the Superintendent of Police (SP) to submit a report on the incident. Authorities have apprehended three individuals in relation to the incident, and efforts are underway to locate and apprehend the remaining suspects.

In response, a division bench comprising Acting Chief Justice S Chandrashekhar and Justice Navneet Kumar directed the Director General of Police (DGP), Chief Secretary, and Superintendent of Police (SP) to furnish a detailed report on the matter.
Simultaneously, the Dumka administration demonstrated a gesture of compassion by offering financial support to the survivor’s husband. They presented a cheque amounting to Rs 10 lakh as compensation, which was received by the survivor’s husband in the presence of Deputy Commissioner A Dodde and Superintendent of Police Pitamber Singh Kherwar.
According to police reports, the harrowing incident occurred at Kurumahat in the Hansdiha police station area, approximately 300 km from the state capital Ranchi. The victim, a 28-year-old woman, and her 64-year-old husband had traveled from Bangladesh to Dumka on two motorcycles. They were on their way to Nepal via Bihar when the assault took place.

Providing insight into the administrative response, an official mentioned,
“An assistance of Rs 10 lakh was provided to the survivor under victim compensation scheme. Prompt action has been taken in the case. We will try for early conviction of the accused.”
In light of the traumatic experience endured by the tourist couple, the Deputy Commissioner assured that they would receive police protection as they depart Dumka. He emphasized,
“We are ready to extend any help they want.”
Expressing gratitude for the swift response of the Jharkhand Police, the survivor’s husband conveyed his appreciation. As part of the ongoing investigation, three individuals have been apprehended, while efforts are underway to locate the remaining four suspects through a vigorous manhunt.
