WEST BENGAL: Senior BJP leader Suvendu Adhikari faced obstruction from the police Today when attempting to visit the troubled region of Sandeshkhali in North 24 Parganas district. The police prevented his entry into the area citing the government’s appeal to a division bench against the Calcutta High Court’s permission granted to Adhikari to visit.

Adhikari expressed his intention to approach the court again regarding the issue, stating,
“The police have violated the Calcutta High Court order allowing me to visit Sandeshkhali.”
He further added that he would protest the police action and then seek recourse through legal means. This incident marks the third occasion in the past eight days where Adhikari has been barred from visiting Sandeshkhali. While granting permission for his visit, the Calcutta High Court yesterday, had instructed Adhikari to refrain from delivering provocative speeches or inciting any law and order disturbances in the area.
Following this, a division bench of the Calcutta High Court Today (20 Feb 2024) again allowed Leader of Opposition in West Bengal Assembly Suvendu Adhikari to visit Sandeshkhali village, which has been witnessing protests over allegations of sexual atrocities and land grab by some ruling TMC leaders.
The division bench presided by Chief Justice T S Sivagnanam refused to interfere into a single bench order that allowed Adhikari and another BJP MLA Shankar Ghosh to visit Sandeshkhali on Tuesday.
The West Bengal government moved an appeal before the division bench challenging Monday’s(19 Feb 2024) order of Justice Kausik Chanda.
The division bench, also comprising Justice Hiranmay Bhattacharyya, directed the BJP leader to ensure that none of the supporters or people belonging to the party accompany them, except security personnel, who have been deployed for them.
The situation in Sandeshkhali remains tense following allegations made by numerous women against Trinamool Congress leader Shajahan Sheikh and his associates, accusing them of land-grabbing and coercive sexual assaults. Shajahan has been evading authorities since January 5 when a group, purportedly linked to him, attacked Enforcement Directorate officials during a raid related to a ration scam investigation.
