KOLKATA: On 21st May: The Calcutta High Court issued order, providing temporary relief to Rekha Patra, the BJP’s candidate from Basirhat. The court ruled that there should be no coercive action against her until June 14 in connection with a suo motu case initiated by the Sandeshkhali Police.

Justice Jay Sengupta, presiding over the case, emphasized the need to avoid coercive measures against Patra and other petitioners until June 14 regarding the suo motu case initiated by the police on May 12. This case was related to protests staged in front of the Sandeshkhali police station.

Patra, along with several others, approached the High court to challenge the suo motu case and requested for its quashing. The next hearing on this matter is scheduled for June 12.

During the proceedings, the petitioners’ counsel highlighted the events of May 10, when individuals allegedly affiliated with the ruling political faction attacked them with weapons. Despite their resistance, the attackers fled the scene, leaving behind a seized firearm, which was subsequently handed over to the police, resulting in an FIR being lodged.

The counsel further explained that the protests outside the police station were in response to perceived inaction regarding the case, as no arrests had been made.

Justice Sengupta expressed disappointment over the failure to make any arrests in connection with the case filed by the petitioners at the Sandeshkhali police station.
